“Spelling variations include: Spratt, Spratte, Sprat, Sprett, Spret and others.
First found in Dorset where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: William Sprat who settled in New Jersey in 1685; Thomas Spratt settled in Virginia in 1635; Mary Spratt settled in New England in 1635; Edward, Jacob, John, Robert, Thomas Spratt, all arrived in Philadelphia between 1820 and 1850.”
