Spratt, Ohio

Hi,

I was just googling and looking for Spratt relatives when I came across your site. I wondered if you knew there was a Spratt, Ohio. It’s not much more than an intersection now, but still appears on some maps. From other researchers I understand it was once called Spratt Station and was a stop on the narrow gauge railroad. It’s between Zanesville and Cumberland, OH and is where some of my paternal grandmother’s family originated. Near as I know now they came to that place between 1820 and 1830. I’d be interested to know if you hear from other Spratts who originated in Rich Hill Tp. Muskingum Co. Ohio.

  1. Spratt, Ohio still exists. There are two signs on the highway about 100 yards apart. Blink and you will miss them. The only building left is the old combination store, gas pump and post office which is near falling down. My grandparents lived on a farm outside of Spratt and received their mail at Spratt. My grandfather used to take me to the store in the 1940’s and buy me candy. The building seemed quite large when I was four years old. The last time I was there, about three years ago, I was amazed at how really small it is.

At that time there were two families living in Spratt. The human population was seven and was outnumbered by the goats. This was coal country and eventually the coal company came in and strip mined everything so there is nothing left today except the old store and the signs.
